A pregnant Seattle meteorologist has hit back at a critic who claimed her tight outfits that showed off her baby bump during live broadcasts “disturbed” viewers.
Claire Anderson, who is 7 1/2 months pregnant, is a meteorologist for Fox 13 Seattle and shared the humiliating email she received to her 10,000 followers on TikTok earlier this month.
“Please, please, please pack the form-fitting dresses until after the baby,” wrote a viewer named Kathy Anderson. “Your mother’s tire has gotten so big that your overall appearance is distracting from your presentation.”
Kathy suggested to the TV host that she would be better off trying on “something loose and flowy” instead of the fitted weatherman outfit she wears during every broadcast.
“You give some of the best presentations on TV, so you deserve viewers’ undivided attention,” the message read.
The body shamer signed the email “with great respect” to indicate she wasn’t being rude.
Anderson is due in January 2025 and is her first child with husband Garrett, whom she married in September 2023.
“Here’s the thing Kathy, I appreciate it, but remember we should never comment on what women wear and look like,” Anderson said. “Especially when we’re pregnant.”
Anderson then gave a preview of the cream-colored, knee-length dress, which became a lightning rod for negative reviews.
“I don’t know, here’s the thing, she’s still two months from this,” Anderson said in the clip, pointing out that Kathy doesn’t like the way she looks.
The Seattle native, who started working at the station in 2023, says she was “feeling good” about picking out the dress, but was surprised when she returned to her desk after her segment and discovered Kathy’s email.
“I go back and see that email and I’m like, ‘Man.’ Like, really? Bad stuff,” Anderson told Today.
Kathy’s email wasn’t the only one Anderson received criticizing her for her outfit, but it was the one that made the biggest impact.
Anderson recorded the short video on social media to bring the conversation about women supporting women.
“It’s 2024, women support women, yet we still have the ugliest emails from women,” she told the media.
Anderson called out critics for commenting on a woman’s pregnant body because they don’t know the full story of their lives.
“My message was just like, ‘Guys, remember, we’re in a time, in a place, in the world, where we don’t need to comment on someone’s body if you don’t think it looks amazing,'” Anderson said. “Unless someone asks you what they look like, we don’t need to comment.”
“Especially in this day and age, fertility and being pregnant — people are open to that,” she added. “We don’t know how long it took to get pregnant? How hard was it? Was it emotional? Was it difficult for you? Are you having a good pregnancy? Do you have a hard time?”
Many comments under Anderson’s original TikTok were positive and supportive of the TV personality.
“I love love love when women wear their bump loud and proud!!!” a read comment.
“I respectfully (or maybe not) disagree with him. Show that bump!!! ❤️❤️congratulations!!” wrote another.
On Wednesday, Anderson returned to the studio, this time in a gold, long-sleeved dress, showing off her baby bump in a photo posted to her Instagram story.
